What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a well-known teeth disease. It is clenching or grinding of the teeth during sleep. Many of us suffering from bruxism, but we do not know because the condition appears during sleep. If you are alone in your bedroom, then there are very low chances you get to know about your condition. However, gum’s muscle pain, pangs in gums, and crooked teeth are a few signs that will tell you that you are going through clenching teeth disease. According to a Journal, 30 million to 40 million kids and adults are suffering from bruxism. Moreover, if you are sharing your room with someone, then you will get to know about your grinding teeth condition because the sound of the teeth grinding does not allow any other person to sleep. It disturbs your oral health and your partner’s sleep.



Signs and Symptoms of Bruxism

As it is a disease that shows its activities during your sleep; thus, you do not know, either you are suffering from it not. However, you may know about from the signs or symptoms mentioned below:

1.      Acute pain in jaw muscles.

2.      The jaw muscles will show rhythmic contractions.

3.      Bleeding from the gums during brushing in the morning time.

4.      Disturbed sleep.

5.      Stretched or tight jaw muscles.

6.      Dry mouth.

7.      Pain in the face and ears.

8.      Jaw muscles that are tight or painful.

9.      Clicking on the temporomandibular joint.

10.    Injured gums.

11.    Crooked teeth.

12.    Broken or loose filling of the teeth.

13.    Headache.

14.    Swelling in the lower jaw.

Cause of Bruxism

Sometimes there is no reason for clenching your teeth. A person does it due to habit. It becomes a habit to grind the teeth during sleep. However, some dentists said that depression and anxiety are some of the causes of bruxism. A person grinds its teeth during sleep out of anger and tension. Sometimes emotional imbalance can lead to clenching teeth habit. Another medical reason is malocclusion or when the teeth and jaw are not parallel, then a person suffers from the clenching teeth disease. Moreover, there is a rare disease in the nerves and muscles of the face that can cause grinding teeth to habit in a person.


According to the dentists, some people go through bruxism due to the side effects of some medicines; however, it is a very rare condition. The medications for depression can harm a person in the shape of grinding teeth. Some of the pills are Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), and Paxil (paroxetine). Moreover, family genes are another primary source that develops clenching teeth in you.

Preventions for Bruxism

First, you need to know why you are suffering from bruxism, what is the root cause? After that, you can prevent it or treat it. If you are suffering from depression and taking the related medicines, then you need discussion sessions and therapies to cure your condition. Moreover, you need to alter your diet and eating patterns. Do not follow anything new on a guts basis, you need to consult a doctor. Moreover, your dentist may give you an artificial teeth mold, you will need to put it in your mouth before sleep, then you can get rid of this habit.

Treatment for Bruxism



If your teeth get damaged because of the grinding and clenching, then you need the restoration of the crooked tooth. Therefore, the dentist will first treat your vandalized nerves and gums. Moreover, you may need filling and crown treatment. The doctor will suggest you a guard to keep in the mouth to prevent the grinding habit. Moreover, hypnosis can help you to leave the bruxism habit and you will sleep peacefully.
